This is where everything comes together โ€” a real-world race session from first lap to final tweak.

Lesson 1 of 6

๐Ÿ“‹ Step 1: Set Your Baseline

Before changing anything, get a known working setup. The app gives you a solid starting point.

Never start from zero. Use the RC Tuner Setup Builder to generate a baseline setup for your exact chassis and today's conditions.

The Builder uses proven base settings for your car model, then adjusts for:

โ€ข Track surface (carpet, asphalt, etc.)
โ€ข Weather/temperature
โ€ข Track style (fast, technical, mixed)
โ€ข Your experience level

Once you have a baseline, LOAD it into the app. This becomes your reference point for the day.

Screenshot your baseline setup page. When you're mid-session and things go wrong, you need to know "what worked 20 minutes ago" as a reference point to revert to.

๐Ÿ”„ Step 2: First Laps โ€” Listen to the Car

Drive the baseline unmodified for 3-4 laps. Gather data. Note what the car does, don't fix yet.

Your first 3-4 laps are RESEARCH, not racing. Drive a CONSISTENT pace and note:

โ€ข Where does the car feel good?
โ€ข Where does it feel bad?
โ€ข Entry? Mid? Exit? Which corners?
โ€ข Braking zones: stable or sliding?

The golden rule: NEVER change two things at once during first session. You need to isolate what each change does.

First-lap observation checklist

Corner ENTRY behavior:
Steering response time ยท Initial bite ยท Does it rotate easily or resist?
Corner MID behavior:
Can it hold the line? Does it drift out (push) or rotate too much (loose)?
Corner EXIT behavior:
When you hit the throttle, does it bite or slide? Does it push straight?
STRAIGHT-LINE behavior:
Tracking stability ยท Does it wander under power? Does it brake straight?

Your first impression might be wrong. Drive at LEAST 3 laps before deciding something needs fixing. Tire temp builds up, and the car may behave very differently after 2 laps vs lap 1.

โšก Step 3: Quick Tune โ€” AI Diagnosis

Describe the symptom, the app suggests the fix. Ranked by confidence.

Open the Quick Tune tool in RC Tuner. Select your symptom and timing, and get a ranked list of fixes.

Each suggestion includes:

โ€ข What to change
โ€ข How much to change it
โ€ข Confidence score
โ€ข What else it might affect (trade-offs)

The algorithm uses your: chassis model, current setup, track conditions, and common physics to rank suggestions.

Example Quick Tune session

"Car pushes (understeers) in the mid-corner of long sweeping turn 3"
#1: Add 0.3ยฐ front camber 85% confidence
Effect: More front corner grip. Trade-off: Slight straight-line drag increase.
#2: Soften front spring 0.2kg 65% confidence
Effect: More front weight transfer = more front grip. Trade-off: More initial dive on braking.
#3: Add 0.5mm front droop 55% confidence
Effect: More front mechanical travel. Trade-off: May reduce initial steering sharpness.
๐ŸŽฏ Rule: try #1 first

Start with the HIGHEST confidence fix. Drive 2-3 laps. If it helps, KEEP it and address the next issue. If it doesn't help, REVERT it, then try #2.

The Quick Tune rankings are physics-based. Don't skip to #3 just because it 'sounds easier' โ€” it's ranked lower for a reason.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Step 4: Community Comparison โ€” What Do the Pros Run?

Compare your setup against what the fastest drivers run on your exact chassis. Use it as a sanity check.

The Community feature in RC Tuner shows you real setups from fast drivers on your chassis. This is your 'is my setup in the ballpark?' check.

Use it to:

โ€ข Verify your numbers aren't crazy.
โ€ข Get ideas when stuck in a tuning loop.
โ€ข Understand what the track rewards (do most top drivers run soft or stiff front?).

But DON'T:

โ€ข Copy a setup exactly without understanding WHY each number is where it is.
โ€ข Let community pressure override your data (your car, your driving style, your track).
โ€ข Chase the fastest driver's setup if you're not at their skill level yet.

Smart community comparison

โœ“ Compare RANGES first
Look at what range most top drivers run (e.g., "3.8-4.2kg front spring"). If yours is way outside, there's probably a reason to adjust toward that range.
โœ“ Match the track TYPE
Don't compare your indoor carpet setup to someone's outdoor asphalt setup. The track type matters more than the chassis.
โš ๏ธ Driver level matters
The fastest driver might have a very aggressive setup that requires their skill level. Start with top-3 drivers who have a CONSISTENT pace, not just raw speed.

๐Ÿ“Š Step 5: Debrief โ€” What Did We Learn?

After your session, write down what changed, what worked, what didn't. This is your tuning journal.

The most underused tool in RC racing is documentation. Fast drivers keep notes. Here's what matters:

โ€ข Starting setup (screenshot or saved file)
โ€ข Every change you made (and why)
โ€ข The RESULT of each change (better, worse, no change)
โ€ข Track conditions (temp, surface, grip level)
โ€ข Your lap times and consistency

This data turns one day of racing into YEARS of learning. You'll see patterns: "Every time track temp is high, I need X setup change."

A session where nothing worked is only a waste if you don't WRITE DOWN what didn't work. "X doesn't work for Y reason" is extremely valuable data for next visit. Save it in the app or a notebook.

๐Ÿ” Step 6: Iterate โ€” Repeat the Cycle

Tuning is a loop, not a destination. Each session builds on the last. Small improvements stack.

Every race weekend: baseline โ†’ first laps โ†’ Quick Tune fix โ†’ compare โ†’ debrief โ†’ iterate.

With each session:

โ€ข You'll know your car better
โ€ข You'll have a 'book' of setups for track types
โ€ข Your baseline will improve (start closer to optimal)
โ€ข You'll need fewer changes per session

Eventually you'll reach a level where your baseline IS the fast setup. Changes are tiny, targeted adjustments for the specific day's conditions.
